Identifying and selecting health measures for health disparities research

A brief history of conceptual frameworks of determinants of health and health disparities (distinguishing health services research from population based research). Identifying study populations (e.g., patients, community members). Evidence of health and treatment disparities from the literature will be used to illustrate main points.

Determinants of health and health disparities: conceptual frameworks and mechanisms

For studies of disparities where racial/ethnic groups will be compared, we need to know that measures have similar psychometric properties across groups and that no bias is present. We present a framework for considering conceptual adequacy and equivalence, and psychometric adequacy and equivalence. We will review methods for locating self-reported measures, and provide a brief overview of how to critique measures for adequacy and equivalence, and how to select the best ones as candidates for a study of disparities.
